Opening night always is a special occasion in baseball, but for Mike Zuanich, Thursday's game was both memorable and profitable.

One of only two returning Modesto Nuts in the starting lineup, Zuanich had three hits, including a homer, and four Nuts pitchers gave up one single apiece in an 8-0 victory.

The predicted rain stayed away, but threatening skies, stiff breezes and a first-pitch temperature of 48 degrees held down the opening night attendance to 3,177 hardy fans.

Zuanich was unfazed by the chill. After lining a single to right field in his first at-bat, he launched a home run off a metal billboard attached to the top of the fence in left-center, about 410 feet from home plate.

The sign has been in place for more than 10 years, with payouts offered to any player hitting the sign with a batted ball. Zuanich became the first in all that time to accomplish the feat, and split a $500 prize with a fan.

Making it all the more special for Zuanich was the presence of his father and grandfather, who made the drive from Torrance to watch him play.

Despite being a slugger in high school and at UC Santa Barbara, Zuanich never before had homered as a professional with his dad in the stands.

"I was just trying to put good wood on the ball because I'm never trying to hit home runs," said Zuanich, who hit three homers in 59 games last season for the Nuts. "I knew I hit the ball well, but I thought it was too low to get over the fence. The main thing is to get good at-bats early in the season to build a good base."

Based solely on statistics, Zuanich's return to Modesto this season was something of a surprise. He arrived in Modesto last season in May and struggled early as he found himself spot-starting at first base and in the outfield.

But over the final three months of 2010, despite never having a set position to call his own, Zuanich hit .367 to lead the team.

"It's a testament to our organization that we have good players backed up at that position," said Nuts manager Jerry Weinstein. "He's not going to play every day in front of Ben Paulsen in Tulsa, and they have people in Triple-A at first base who have played in the big leagues.

"That's why he's here. Plus, he's never played every day. He's always been a first baseman and outfielder, and now he's going to get the chance to play every day."

The Nuts added two more runs in the fourth following the home run, then added three more in the fifth, with Zuanich driving home the last run with a soaring sacrifice fly to the wall in center.

Anything after that was overkill the way the Nuts were pitching.

Starter Chad Bettis, making his first California League appearance, walked the first two Ports he faced and needed 29 pitches to get through the first inning.

He sailed after that, allowing only two more baserunners — on a walk and a clean single — in his five innings. He left after 85 pitches.

Alan DeRatt, another holdover from the 2010 Nuts roster, threw two scoreless innings, and newcomers Scott Deal and Cody Woods worked an inning apiece to secure the shutout, allowing only one Stockton runner to reach third base. The lone downside was the seven walks allowed by the Nuts' mound quartet.

Scott Robinson and Angelys Nina had two hits apiece as Modesto collected 12 hits against three Ports pitchers.

"It's hard to shut people out in this league," Weinstein said. "We walked too many, but we had some great at-bats, we ran the bases well, we pitched through traffic and we played great defense. Our defense has been outstanding all spring, and I know saying that is the kiss of death."
